* Artistic & commercial aspects:

Times have changed, new filmmakers have come forward to prove that artistic movies can be commercial too! You do not always need melodramatic emotional scenes, supernatural fights, item dance to make a Commercial Movie. This movie captures all the essence of an art movie without losing the glamor of a commercial movie. All along it keeps the focus on the ‘Acid attack’.

* Pallavi The dreamer

The movie revolves around the life of Pallavi, a talented, ambitious woman with dreams to be a pilot. Evelin, the young girl, who essayed the younger Pallavi did a fantastic job. She travels by air the first time as part of the NCC program. The fire and determination in her eyes makes us wait for the day when she flies her own first flight.

* The darker shade of Malayali men

Govind, Pallavi’s lover from school days is possessive and authoritative. A typical Malayali man who in this age too, believes his wife’s life should revolve around him. He imposes his right to control her decisions and ambitions. I was able to relate to Govind’s nature and analyze the grey shades within me. Pallavi dreads his authoritarian nature. She musters all the courage to break free from this abusive relation. The impact of this is the crux: The Acid attack. Asif Ali who played Govind brings an urge in the audience to kick his balls. Well played!

* Pallavi The survivor

Pallavi’s face drenched in acid makes you feel the agony, anger and resentment. This moment is captured realistically. The acid attack happens before her debut flying test. The next scenes show her struggling with her health and facing rejection. She is depressed and loses all hope. Unexpectedly Vishal (played by Tovino), a friend from yesteryears helps her with a placement in one of the airlines. This brings a gleam of hope. The movie essays her determination to follow her dream to be an air hostess. The scene where Pallavi takes her first flight literally gave me goosebumps. Her father’s emotions made me misty-eyed too. ‘Uyare’ means ‘higher, high up in the sky’. The movie depicts that you cannot stop an ambitious girl, even a face masked with acid attack has a right to fly high.

* Court of justice?

The court aquits  Govind due to lack of evidence. Govind’s advocate along with convincing the judge that his client is innocent also offers that his client will marry Pallavi as an act of kindness.

Pallavi is angry and dejected. All emotions so evident in her voice and eyes. In a helpless voice she asks the judge, “What??” The judge asks her to consider Govind’s offer to marry him.

* Pallavi Reel vs Real

Parvathy (who played Pallavi), you are amazing and have nailed it! The movie is a resurrection of real life Parvathy who was a victim of social media attack. You just proved nothing can stop you if you are willing to fight.

* Haunting BGM

Gopi Sunder has yet again done magic with his notes. His soundtrack multiplies the emotions on the screen.

* Strong, well-scripted Screenplay

Bobby-Sanjay both brothers did a fantastic job with the screenplay. Taking a real life issue as the base, making a fictitious story and ensuring the audience travel through Pallavi’s life, that is truly hard-work.

* Manu Ashokan The maker

It’s tough to believe it’s your first movie. You are a great filmmaker. Looking forward to watch several more of your movies.

* ProducersSCube films (Shenuga, Shegna and Sherga)

Hats off to the three women producers! An offbeat movie production would have been a tough call. Women producers are very rare in the industry, may you be an inspiration for others too!

* Final

I am a Malayalam movie lover who watches many of the movies in theaters and the rest on DVDs, the experience of watching Uyarewas truly touching. It took me back to the times when Bharathan, Padmarajan and Siby Malayil shocked us with their creations. It literally took me a couple of hours to overcome the emotional burden.

Go watch it if you still haven’t!
