I often feel that “Humanity” and “Wild” are two terms being misconstrued since the beginning of Stone Age. Our continuous obsession with social Darwinism that human race is superior has led us to create a selfish responsibility; a responsibility that it is our duty to ameliorate all other species. Humans have encroached the territories and abode of wild animals. We are the perpetrators and hence we are the wicked one’s here. The fact we all know is that animals have always been on the earth, much before we humans were. My thoughts are that we were anachronistically placed on this planet!
When any human does a good deed we label it as “Humanity”. On the other hand when humans behave cruelly then we call them ‘wild’ or we refer to them as ‘animals’. Seriously do you think this is a correct connotation? Are we right in judging animals? What about judging ourselves? Humans, in the name of development have depleted environment. We have not bothered about the impacts of our deeds on nature. On the other hand, animals have always treated the planet as if they were guests. We, treat our planet as though we own it. Our superior complex is shown in the way we deal with the earth.
Time and again we have seen nature sending us communication in the form of plagues, tsunamis, earthquakes and the list goes on. Nature has been reacting in its own way; as a response to our bickering and belligerent character. This time it has brought Corona into picture. I think nature is still trying its level best to teach us a lesson. But are we ready to change ourselves? Are we prepared to maintain the ecological balance and bio diversity? I don’t think so. This had happened before and we did not change ourselves.
I’m reminded of this excerpt from Bhagavad-Gita, it seems apt in this time of pandemonium and distress:
Here’s my translation:
Whenever there is a decay of righteousness, and there is exaltation of unrighteousness,
Then I myself (God in the form of NATURE) will come forth,
For the protection of the good, for the destruction of evil-doers,
For the sake of firmly establishing righteousness, I (NATURE) am born from age to age.
I truly wish from the bottom of my heart that this global crisis resolves. However my greater wish is that humans must change and understand nature. If not this will be the end of us.
A stitch in time saves nine they say, I’m just trying to put my stitch before its late.
