Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Necessity is the mother of invention by Dolly Devi

The phrase “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” originated from the old maxim famously written by Plato “our need will be the real creator”.   Notably, people create or invent things predominantly when they feel the real urge or need for them. During present Covid times we see and understand its relevance. However, this tech-savvy world has become so busy that people hardly spare quality time for their families. This had made man lazy too! With a snap of a figure we would opt for fast and preserved food, majorly because there is no enough time to cook. At times we visit the mall or a departmental store to pick the household items or call up a food delivery service to satiate our evening snack-cravings. This had become a routine in our lives. Guests are now served with restaurant bought food, even festivities were celebrated with store-bought ladoo, pitha, et all.

But during this lockdown, we were rather forced to discover a new version of ourselves. Our hands which were tied to the mobile were ready to try new things. Ultimately, we tried our hands at most things which we would have otherwise picked up from the roadside stall. When we craved for street food, we cooked them. Right from samosas, phuchkas (pani puri), momos, cakes, pastries, we did it all. Household chores which were so depended on domestic help were now done without any complaint. Our bodies were nurtured, something which most of the times we had turned a blind eye and a deaf ear. Of course, they were tended only when the severe need arose. Now a day’s people are taking out more time for meditation, yoga, or other forms of physical exercise. We are not shy to delve into long lost hobbies. Reading books, painting, dancing, playing a musical instrument, et all are now back on the shelf.

We failed to introspect and observe our true feelings when days were less bitter. New adventures which we never thought we could do or would do were also given a try. And then we found out that we loved doing those things. We developed new talents and ideas. And we discovered our hidden potentials. Our creativity grew to the fullest. We had not unleashed our potential and abilities when time were better. Actually, the worst part is that, it took a pandemic to know our true worth. Nevertheless, on an optimistic note, we can still rejoice at the fact that, it is better-late-than-never.

This pandemic has rendered many people jobless and many more unemployed. Statistically, it is mostly the young generation whose career or job are at stake. All hopes and dreams are shattered. They can only see darkness prevailing in front of them. Thrust indoors because of the lockdown and having nothing to do but being worried about their future seems mere wastage of time to them.

However, it would be sheer foolishness to wait for the government to put money into their pockets. It is indeed  the need of the hour that people make real use of these discovered and developed talents. Most youngsters are fortunate enough to discover their talents at a young age. Now is the best time to use this potential in a planned and an organized manner and to discover their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses.

There is always a way to turn talent into income and then into a living. Ideas are many for the takers It could be by selling a service or a product or making an entire new product. One needs to seek the right information and motivation from the right source. This can also create employment opportunities for many. People with similar ideas and interests can come together and empower one another. During these difficult times, instead of criticizing and mocking people for doing challenging initiatives which they never did before, can’t we extend our moral support? Uplift them in their ventures and let the current necessity be the mother of their inventions. Who knows, you might be supporting a future entrepreneur!
