Shaped by Struggles

Shaped by Struggles poem by Joby John

It’s the harsh afternoon sun
That taught me to cherish the shade of a tree.
It’s hunger
That revealed the true taste of a meal.

It’s my struggles and suffering
That sowed kindness in my heart.
It’s the sharp gravel that pricked my feet
That showed me the worth of a slipper.

It’s the harsh words spoken to me
That taught me to speak with compassion.
It’s the challenges life threw at me
That taught me how to smile.

It’s the worthless arguments I endured
That revealed the value of silence.
It’s the many ‘No’s I faced
That made me say every ‘Yes’ with conviction.

And… it’s not just the good,
But also, the bad,
That shaped me into who I am today.
