Cry for Ukraine, cry for the world.
A brochure about Ukraine, a country known for its diverse yet beautiful landscape, well-preserved culture, beautiful women, and a terrible nuclear disaster, describes the country. But as I write these lines, the war on Ukraine has been underway for a month.
Sadly, this beautiful country of forty four million people now has almost seven million internally displaced and another ten million fleeing. It has been reported that over a thousand civilians have died and thousands more have been injured. A number of residential areas as well as military bases have been destroyed. The wreck less destruction continues unabated.
Everybody, except for the hard-core supporters of Putin, sees this as an inhuman act of aggression by a giant toward a small nation. This is a David versus Goliath fight. Tears and blood are flowing. Children are being separated from their parents. A sense of fear is growing, especially in regards to chemical or nuclear warfare. There is no doubt that every sensible human being around the world decries this war. In fact, it is now being seen as a third world war.
All-political-play
War is always about fighting for power and dominance. In this case, most analysts believe that Putin wants to regain the lost glory of the erstwhile U.S.S.R. In addition, he wants to contain the power of NATO, which Ukraine strives to achieve.
Putin describes the operation as a ‘special military operation’, not a war or an invasion.
He justifies it as a noble gesture devoted to “demilitarizing and de-Nazifying Ukraine” to protect people who have suffered eight years of abusive harassment and genocide under the Ukrainian government. As a matter of fact, if anyone in Russia even dares to refer to this situation as an invasion or war, or if they criticize the military operation, the police swoop in and immediately arrest them.
A major objective of NATO, the United States, and the rest of the world is to checkmate the ambitions of Russia. They want to establish hegemony over the world. The silence of giants like China and India speaks volumes.
It is a war for the Ukrainians. Taking away a person’s freedom is an assault on their rights. There are no two ways about it, Ukraine is fighting for its rights. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in one of his emotional appeals, “When I ran for President, I said we each are the President, because we are all responsible for our state, for our beautiful Ukraine. And now as it happens, each of us is a warrior. A warrior in his place. And I am sure that each of us will win. Glory to Ukraine!”
In the end, who will win the war?
The sad truth is that nobody wins a war. As Raheem DeVaughn wrote,
“No one will win the war
See families only die
And birds won’t soar the sky
And there’ll be no sun to shine
No country wins a war
The grass won’t grow the same
The moon won’t shine
At night and there’s a losing fight
Nobody wins a war”
Nevertheless, the war continues because someone wants to boost their ego. It is evident that someone’s pockets are full, which is why the war industry continues to thrive. Take a look at the appeals for peace. You will find that nearly every leader of repute has called for peace. However, no one heeds their call.
Thousand more shouts needed
When there is not going to be a winner in a war, when people will die in wars, when children will become orphans, and when there will be a million tears flowing down with the blood, then the call for peace has to be louder. Moreover, in the unlikely event of a chemical or nuclear war, our beautiful planet will die.
It is now our responsibility, as individual citizens, to call for peace. There is no need for war. Nuclear weapons are not needed. It is possible to achieve global peace and harmony. However, people will tell you that you are naïve to think about peace. Nevertheless, we need to trust in peace and cry out for peace.
Remember that a thousand shouts on the mountain can bring down an avalanche!
